Caniço and Caniço de Baixo

From Funchal, take the highway east, then turn off towards Garajau, and continue to Miradouro Christo Rei and Ponta do Garajau. There is a public car park right in front. Hike the short path to the Christ the Redeemer statue, as you'll enjoy a magnificent view from here. Continue on by cable car down to Praia do Garajau, located in a sheltered bay, where you can enjoy seafood, local specialties, and cool drinks at the O Mero restaurant right by the water. Then head to Canico de Baixo and make your first stop at the Hotel Alpino Atlantico (Rua da Falésia 29), which sits high above the sea and boasts panoramic views. The hotel houses the Ashoka Ayurveda health center, which offers Ayurveda treatments, yoga retreats, and spa treatments. The range of options is diverse. Ashoka also operates the SPA in Palheiro Village and the SPA in the Galoresort further east in Canico de Baixo (Rua Don Francisco Santana 3), which is located on a cliff and offers great leisure value with a gym, a restaurant, a lounge bar and the Lido Galomar beach below. Directly at the Lido Galomar you will find the Manta Diving Madeira diving school. We recommend that you go diving on this stretch of coast because the warm offshoots of the Gulf Stream (water temperature 18°C ​​- 24°C all year round) and the protected habitat of the Atlantic nature reserve that is located here offer a biodiversity that can almost be compared to tropical waters. A tip from us if you are traveling with children: Drive a little further east to Praia dos Reis Magos beach (Rua dos Reis Magos 118). Here you will find numerous small snack bars, parasols on the beach and the opportunity to jump directly into the Atlantic from a cliff top, as well as a shallow, sheltered sea pool. Also worthwhile is a walk along the beach promenade from here back west to the center of Canico de Baixo. On the way you will pass the ruined fort of Reis Magos (Rua Don Francisco Santana). On the way back, to round off your stay in Canico de Baixo, stop at the Ponta da Oliveira viewpoint (Estrada da Ponta da Oliveira 50) and enjoy the magnificent view on the Atlantic. Another tip for the outdoor sports enthusiasts among you: We would especially like to recommend lokoloko madeira. The outdoor experience agency, which is run by a young and friendly team, specializes in mountain biking, canyoning, and hiking. You'll find lokoloko in the Hotel Galosol on Rua Dom Francisco Santana.
The higher part of the village of Canico, located above the Via Rapida VR1 highway, has just as much to offer as the picturesque and rugged southeastern coastline, with its breathtaking cliffs rising out of the sea, on which the lower part of the town Canico de Baixo is situated. Of particular note here is the Quinta Splendida (Estrada da Ponta da Oliveira 11), a beautiful mansion-hotel in typical Madeiran style with restaurants, bars, a spa, and a magnificent botanical garden, which is definitely worth a visit. Around the Quinta Splendida, you'll find numerous cafés and other restaurants serving traditional Madeiran dishes, such as the Restaurante Central (Rua João Paulo II 10). If you walk past Quinta Splendida from the lower parts of Canico, you'll reach the beautiful Largo Padre Lomelino square, which invites you to linger with its view of the pretty church and other cafes and restaurants. Continue up Rua Joao Paulo II to the cozy Restaurante La Terraca, from which you'll see the Canico Shopping center on your left. If you're tired after this climb to the higher parts of Canico, simply take one of the taxis home from the Praca De Taxis em Canico opposite the shopping center.
