RIBEIRA BRAVA
Ribeira Brava marks the beginning of the sunny southwest of the Island of Flowers, the part of Madeira with the most hours of sunshine and the highest temperatures. The small town is nestled in a bay and boasts a beautiful beach. Ribeira Brava means Wild River. The town is conveniently located between the capital, Funchal, and Calheta. Via the VE3 and VE4, you can also quickly reach the beautiful north of Madeira from here; the main route leads directly to Sao Vicente.
Ribeira Brava offers many sights and shopping opportunities, as well as a sprawling industrial area. You can visit the fortress, the lighthouse, or the pretty Igreja de Sao Bento Church, or explore the Ethnographic Museum. On the beach promenade of Ribeira Brava Bay, enjoy Madeiran specialties in one of the numerous restaurants and snack bars located directly by the Atlantic Ocean. Afterwards, enjoy Madeira's national drink in one of the island's best Poncha bars, whose name says it all: Taberna da Poncha. It is located on the VE4 on the way north, picturesquely nestled in the mountains just before Serra de Agua.
Since Ribeira Brava is surrounded by mountains and high cliffs, you can reach one of the numerous viewpoints on foot, offering fantastic views on the south coast: for example, the Miradouro de Sao Sebastiao or the Miradouro de Espigao. If you're heading north on the VE4, be sure to make a detour from Serra de Agua to the Pousada dos Vinhaticos, which also offers a viewpoint of Madeira's Massif Central. Continue towards Sao Vicente to the Encumeada viewpoint.
Several popular Levada hikes start from Ribera Brava, such as the Levada Nova or the Levada Serra de Agua to Curral das Freiras. Hiking trails in the Massif Central, such as the Encumeada PR2 from Lugar da Serra to Espiga or the Lombo Cesteiro to Bica da Cana, are also within easy reach.
