FUNCHAL'S DISTRICTS: AJUDA
Funchal's Ajuda district is located in the western part of the São Martinho district, overlooking the Atlantic coast and the capital's largest public beach, the harbor and the sea. Ajuda is a quiet district and is well served by public transportation. Bus lines connect Ajuda to the old town and the Lido waterfront. The Forum Madeira shopping center is directly across Rua da Ajuda, where you'll find supermarkets and many shops.
LEISURE ACTIVITIES
Jardins da Ajuda
A small, quiet park with sea views and beautiful green spaces, ideal for relaxing strolls, picnics, or outdoor yoga. The Jardim da Ajuda covers approximately 11,800 square meters and opened in 2005. It features approximately 16 palm tree species, a playground, a basketball court, two table tennis tables, a pétanque court, and board games.
Praia Formosa
Funchal's main beach, consisting of pebbles and sand, has a promenade lined with numerous restaurants, bars, and cafes. From here, you can take a lovely stroll along the beach, promenade, and over boardwalks to the neighboring town of Camara de Lobos. Praia Formosa is equipped with showers and changing rooms. It stretches for approximately 2 kilometers and consists of four sub-beaches: Praia Formosa, Praia Nova, Praia dos Namorados, and Praia do Areeiro. The water quality here is excellent.
Túnel das Poças do Gomes
The approximately 100 to 150-meter-long tunnel connects Praia Formosa with the Doca do Cavacas (Poças do Gomes) bathing area, whose highlight is the volcanic lava pools, which are continually replenished with seawater by the Atlantic surf. During the tunnel's recent renovation, the lighting was replaced, and it now features safety equipment, including emergency lighting and signage. It is accessible year-round, although temporarily closed in bad weather conditions. The window-like rock openings along the path are spectacular, offering views onto the sea, carrying the sound of the waves into the tunnel, and creating a unique, atmospheric light.
Bathing area Doca do Cavacas (Poças do Gomes)
Natural lava pools located directly by the Atlantic Ocean and constantly replenished by the surf. You feel like you're swimming in the open Atlantic, yet you're in a protected area. The bathing complex is equipped with changing rooms, toilets, showers, lifeguards, a small bar area, and sun loungers and parasols for hire. The bathing complex also has a restaurant serving typical Madeiran specialties, mainly seafood and fish. There is a small entrance fee. The view from here of Cabo Girão and the adjacent Praia Formosa is particularly impressive.
Complexo Balnear da Ponta Gorda | Lido Badeanlage
Public bathing facility with a seawater pool. The bathing facility is sheltered, clean, and well-maintained. It's ideal during rough seas when the open sea is too dangerous, and is also very suitable for children and the elderly. There's a small entrance fee.
